THE GREAT SEA SERPENT OF 1848 6 August 1848 The Sea-serpent was reported to have been seen once again on the 6th August by the officers and crew of H.M.S. Dcedalus, on their passage home from the East Indies. Professor Owen, after considering the account and sketch submitted to him, came to the conclusion that the creature seen was probably “ a large seal floated down on an iceberg, and seeking for shelter. He did not think any such creature as the sea-serpent existed in nature,” Mr. Punch applied this apparition to the prevalence of the revolutionary spirit in Europe, which specially marked the year 1848, and caused so much disaster and dread to the various crowned representatives of l’ancien regime.
