April 13, 2016. Boston, MA. Governor Charlie Baker’s speech to LGBT executives and activists at the 10th Annual Boston Spirit LGBT Executive Networking Night, hosted by Boston Spirit magazine was met with a chorus of boos after he refused to voice support for a bill to prevent bias against transgender people in public spaces. His reluctance to take a stand on the bill was met with chants of “sign the bill” before he abruptly walked off stage about twenty minutes into his remarks. The event’s organizers had said Baker would mingle with the crowd after his speech, but he left without meeting with the attendees. Many people expressed disappointment in the Governor Baker’s unwillingness to support the public accommodations bill which would prohibit bias against transgender people in restaurants, shopping malls, and other public areas. © Marilyn Humphries / The Image Works
